Eligibility Requirements and Application Deadlines for Study Abroad
Applying to Study Abroad: Eligibility & Deadlines
Applying is the first step to making your study abroad goals a reality. Before starting your application in the Belmont Global portal, be sure you meet the eligibility requirements for your preferred program and term, and submit your materials by the listed deadline.
- In all instances, Belmont University reserves the right to approve, retract or deny a student's participation in study abroad. All decisions are at the discretion of the Office of Study Abroad.
To receive Belmont approval for a study abroad program, students must meet the University’s eligibility criteria. Please note:
- Belmont approval alone guarantees admission only for Belmont short-term, faculty-led programs.
- For Provider, Exchange or Direct Enroll programs, students must also meet the partner institution’s admission criteria.
(Spring Break, Maymester, or Summer)
Students must:
- Have completed at least one semester on campus before the program begins
- Be in good academic, financial and disciplinary standing
- Have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
- Submit a complete application (with faculty recommendation if required) by the program deadline
- Meet all pre-departure administrative and financial deadlines after acceptance to a program
(Semester, Academic Year, or Independent Summer)
Students must:
- Have completed your first year on campus before the program starts
- Be in good academic, financial and disciplinary standing at the time of application and when the program begins
- Have a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA
- Submit a complete application with a faculty recommendation by the application deadline
- Meet any applicable language proficiency requirements
- Fulfill all pre-departure administrative and financial obligations after acceptance to a program
- Students may not study abroad for three consecutive terms
- Students are limited to two semesters abroad; a third semester is only possible through Belmont USA
- Short-term, faculty-led programs are not considered semesters for this policy
- Some Belmont students may be eligible to study abroad during their final semester. This is not recommended due to transcript deadlines for graduation set by Belmont's Office of the Registrar. Belmont cannot guarantee international transcripts will arrive in time for graduation certification.
- When choosing to study abroad one's graduation semester, it is critical to understand that if the grades are not received from abroad and posted by Belmont's stated time limit, the Registrar's Office will re-schedule graduation for the following semester (e.g. August or May). Belmont USA programs are recommended for students wishing to participate in a program during their final semester.
